The job

The fast-growing microfluidics technology is enabling solutions for challenges from industrial manufacturing to healthcare applications. The possibility of massively parallel device and fluidics integration allows high throughput, efficient and affordable bio-analyte processing. Despite the promises, however, highly parallelized microfluidics is being hampered by the lack of integrated sensors and actuators that allow automated and reliable fluidic handling in a compact manner. Current technologies require highly complex and bulky external detection (mainly optical) and actuation elements. There is a call for miniaturized, integrated and scalable method for fluidic sensing and bio-analyte detection to allow highly parallelized microfluidic integration.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful and scalable method for fluidic sensing and biological assays. EIS measures the electrical characteristics of electrolytic solutions such as solution conductance or the electrode-electrolyte capacitance. It has been extensively used for characterizations of biomolecules and cells. Recent attempts further demonstrated the possibility of flow characterizations and cytometry with integrated electrodes in microfluidic environment. Besides, components needed for EIS are fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication. Optimal signal quality and high parallelization are readily supported by advanced integrated circuit technology. Little or none peripheral instrument is needed for signal processing. All these advantages allow EIS to be a generic and versatile tool for online microfluidic flow measurement and bio-sensing.

This postdoctoral topic aims at developing EIS-based devices and methods for real-time flow measurements as well as biosensing which can be used for high throughput microfluidic applications. You will be responsible for modelling, design and fabrication of the EIS device. You will also be performing laboratory characterizations of the EIS devices with real samples (e.g. blood) for practical applications. You will be supported by an interdisciplinary team of physicists, chemists and device engineers in imec’s life science technology department.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).   


You have a PhD in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, chemical engineering or equivalent major. You have hands-on experience with electrical or electrochemical measurements. Skills in finite element modelling (COMSOL, ANSYS) or analog circuit design is a strong asset. Experience with microfluidics or microfabrication is a plus. Experience with laboratory programming such as Matlab or LabVIEW is a plus.You speak English fluently. You are a team player.
