Vision

Car manufacturers strive to create vehicles that are safer, more customized, and eco-friendly. This makes them increasingly reliant on chips or semiconductors.

In order to get there, chip technology requires another quantum leap forward: today, it does not yet possess the necessary computing power or energy efficiency to build the next generation of automotive systems. It is time for car manufacturers to leave their mark on chip makers’ strategic roadmaps.

Against this backdrop, the European Chips Act – which was created to address supply chain issues and geopolitical challenges in the semiconductor industry – presents a unique opportunity for the European car manufacturing ecosystem to reclaim a leading position in the global automotive market.

In pursuit of ever more powerful advanced driver assistance services (ADAS), industry and academia are looking into the potential of multiple sensor technologies and sensor suite configurations – including video, ultrasound, radar, and lidar.&nbsp;

Since no one system covers all needs, scenarios, and (traffic/weather) conditions, the next generation of powerful ADAS will likely stem from a combination of technologies.&nbsp;

In this article, Jan Aelterman and David Van Hamme from IPI (imec’s Image Processing and Interpretation research group at Ghent University, Belgium) report on two of the latest breakthroughs that bring pedestrian detection for automotive to the next level: radar-video sensor fusion and automatic tone mapping.&nbsp;

A realistic vision on the potential and challenges for further market adoption of vehicle-integrated photovoltaics

In the World Solar Challenge, student teams compete in solar-powered prototype cars. In this year’s race (that takes place in Morocco), the KU Leuven Agoria team counted on imec to fabricate their solar panels.

Imec presents its on-chip self-calibrating optical beamformer that caters to the next generations of applications such as assisted and autonomous driving, high-resolution earth observation, crop monitoring and flexible high-bandwidth wireless 5G communication.
