For the third consecutive year, the Brussels Platform for Journalism, a joint initiative with Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Université Libre de Bruxelles and Erasmushogeschool Brussel, together with BOZAR - Centre for Fine Arts, the Evens Foundation and imec, organize Difference Day.
This European Gala for Freedom of Expression will take place in Brussels on 3rd May.
Many journalistic and academic societies and organizations as well as media, European and worldwide institutions and foundations are taking part on this day.
Our focus is on (International and European) journalism in relation to press freedom, freedom of expression, quality and creativity. Freedom of expression also implies the respect for opinion of others. It recognizes the difference in people and their convictions. The freedom of expression confirms the recognition of diversity to the state. To us the World Press Freedom day is therefore Difference Day.
As part of Difference Day imec will grant the second imec Press for More award, an encouragement prize for projects and initiatives in support of a better informed society. https://www.iminds.be/en/calls/pressformore_2017
About Difference Day
In 1993, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 3 May as World Press Freedom Day. It serves as a yearly occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom worldwide and to raise awareness for the work journalists; editors and publishers are doing to preserve the democratic value of their profession. Fundamentally, taking this commemoration more broadly, it is about freedom of expression, with respect for difference and the broad variety of voices, opinions and views.
