Visionary Seminar - Personalized Medicine

November 28th, 2019 / Leuven, BE

There is increasing awareness, both in somatic and psychiatric medicine, that every individual is unique, thus optimal treatment is different for each person. Personalized medicine is aiming to predict which treatment would be most beneficial for each individual patient, so that optimal treatment can be given that is fully adjusted to the need of each person.

In order to make such predictions, one needs to identify characteristics that point towards this optimal treatment. The search for such characteristics has mainly been focused on biological markers, boosting fields such as genomics and proteomics, suggesting that these predictions can be best made based on biological factors. Although very successful for some diseases, it has been proven very hard to identify such biomarkers for others, including most psychiatric illnesses.

In this visionary seminar, we will explore the possibilities and boundaries of a digital approach to personalized medicine. What are the possibilities of such a digital approach and what are the challenges?
