Implantables are small devices that are hosted in the human body to alleviate disorders such as deafness, heart rhythm problems, pain, etc. There is a growing need for miniaturized and smarter devices to target diseases that are a burden on the healthcare system. Silicon nanofabrication is a powerful toolbox to develop smart, energy efficient and small chips. However, there are little scalable solutions to use silicon chips in the human body. Additional requirements for this novel technology are biocompatibility, hermeticity, flexibility and durability. Hence, the chip needs to be protected from the harsh environment in the human body, and on the other hand no toxic materials can leak out from the chip to the body environment. The PhD topic seeks to develop a combination of novel process steps, materials and characterization methods to offer solutions for implantables.

Required background: bioelectronics, electrical engineering with biological experience, bioengineering

Type of work: 20% literature, 80% lab or cleanroom work
