CIS Thin Film PV for tandem applications

Optimization of poly crystalline Cu-In-Se (CIS) material for the bottom cell in a photovoltaic system, targeting highest efficiency modules > 35%.   

This master thesis/ internship topic studies the fabrication of CIS materials on glass substrates using a two-step process, developing them to solar cell devices and opto-electronically characterizing them. In addition to the device processing, tasks include the following:

  • Electrical measurements to be performed on the solar cells consist of current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements of CIS solar cell structures. All measurements will be performed as a function of temperature and illumination intensity, to fully characterize the diode parameters of the solar cell structure and to gain insight into the dominant recombination processes in the cell.
  • Optical measurements to be performed may consist of electronic microscopy, temperature and intensity dependent photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. These will allow further insight into the different recombination mechanisms in the solar cells.

The other main objective is to understand CIS thinfilms' growth dynamics under different processing conditions. For that, different characterizations data will be linked to the growth of the absorber to finally optimize the absorber quality for solar cell applications.
The work is highly experimental in nature (85%) and requires independent literature research (15%) at different stages. This makes the project an ideal steppingstone for those looking for process engineering roles.

Skills required:

  • You are proficient in professional oral and written communication in English, as the working language of the group is English.
  • You are a team worker and have a pro-active attitude towards work and learning.
  • You have a background in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, or materials science.
  • Knowledge of Origin and MATLAB is a plus.

The work will be primarily carried out at imec premises at Energyville, in Genk.

Allowance: Imec allowance will be provided for students studying at a non-Belgian university.
