Data scientist in the domain of autonomous drones

For further development of the IDLab machine learning cluster, we are looking for a data scientist for reinforcement learning. 

What you will do

  • You will translate technical and business requirements of internal and external stakeholders into a solution for scheduling autonomous drone flights.
  • You will research and develop new route planning models based on deep reinforcement learning and mathematical modelling for these drone flights.
  • You will integrate the results in a real setup, together with multiple other stakeholders.
  • You will communicate your findings in reports and/or presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • You will work in a small team and participate in research projects, mostly in collaboration with industry. 
  • You have the possibility to start as a PhD student if interested. 

 

Research group

IDLab Antwerp

The Internet & Data Lab (IDLab) is an imec research group at the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. IDLab focuses its research on internet technologies and data science. IDLab is a joint research initiative between Ghent University and the University of Antwerp. Bringing together 300 internet experts, we develop technologies outperforming current solutions for communication subsystems, high speed and low power networking, distributed computing and multimedia processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and web semantics. Within Antwerp, the overall IDLab research areas are machine learning and wireless networking.  IDLab has a unique research infrastructure used in numerous national and international collaborations. 
IDLab collaborates with many universities and research centres worldwide and jointly develops advanced technologies with industry (R&D centers from international companies, Flanders’ top innovating large companies and SME’s, as well as numerous ambitious startups).

Who you are

  • You have a Master of Science or Phd degree, preferably in Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • You have a general background in data science.
  • You have knowledge/experience with software engineering and mathematical modelling.
  • You have experience using deep learning, preferably for reinforcement learning.
  • You are fluent in Python programming.
  • You have experience with deep learning libraries such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Having experience with participating in national and/or international research projects is an advantage. 
  • You are a pro-active problem solver, team player and have strong communication skills.
  • You take ownership of your work.
  • Your English is fluent, both speaking and writing
