Design Engineer for Superconducting Electronics

Imec USA’s Florida-based R&D Center develops new sustainable technologies addressing the growing energy needs of data centers, AI and high-performance computing. Superconducting digital technology is one of the potential new solutions to deliver data center-scale compute power at 100x better energy efficiency in small-volume systems. Leveraging imec core expertise in semiconductor scaling, heterogeneous integration, and system development, we are pioneering superconducting solutions for decentralized, autonomous AI systems enabling revolutionary AI architectures with unique capabilities.
We are seeking a motivated and talented ASIC engineer for the microarchitecture and digital design of superconducting GPUs and CPUs. This position offers you a unique opportunity to work with a full stack cross-site development team integrated across Kissimmee, Florida and Leuven, Belgium. We are working on all aspects of this new digital technology, from developing a new superconducting process using state-of-the-art 300mm silicon wafer BEOL technology to circuit design, system architecture, and software optimization.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Perform full cycle digital design from RTL-to-GDS including verification.
Develop scripts and methods for adapting CAD tools to new technology, including routing and timing closure.
Contribute designs and support the tapeout and testing of superconducting digital chips.
Work with architects to develop microarchitecture for superconducting systems.
Provide creative new insights on gate library development and optimization.
Contribute to publications in international journals and conferences.
Support execution of public and commercial contracts.
Key Qualifications
Master’s or higher degree in Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
6+ years of relevant work experience.
Strong background in digital or mixed signal circuit design with experience in Verilog, System Verilog.
Strong background in hardware engineering including RF, microwave design.
Strong programming skills.
Fluency in CAD tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, Ansys.
Additional Qualifications
Familiarity with fabrication process and tapeout procedure.
Good communication skills for interfacing with internal and external customers.
Ability to take initiative and work independently, while being part of a team.
Pragmatic and hands-on, with a can-do attitude.
Experience with Python, Perl, C or C++ programming.
Experience working in R&D environments.
