Towards next-generation & high-performance acoustic imaging sensor

Introduction
Piezo-electric micro-machined ultrasound transducer (pMUT) arrays are promising to achieve high resolution ultrasound images in a portable or wearable way for spine imaging applications. In order to improve the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), optimized coupling layers between the transducer surface and the targeting tissue/bone need to be investigated.

 

imec plays as a leading role at developing novel technologies that demonstrate such piezoelectric MEMS transducers. Within imec, the scientific experience of the MMICRO team focus on design of PMUT devices, circuits, components and systems as well as their characterization, providing a high-level of ultrasound imaging platform. The context of this work is a collaboration between the Robot-Assisted Surgery Research Group of Professor E. Vander Poorten of KU Leuven and the MMICRO team of Imec.

 

Topic
The aim of this master project is to design and characterize coupling layers of pMUT array for spine imaging application, comparing the results to the reference without any coupling. The research work includes but not limited to:

1) design and simulation of coupling layers for variant PMUT devices, taking account of mech-electrical and acoustic effects;

2) characterize the mech-electrical performance and validate the imaging properties from a device level towards an array level.

 

The candidate
You are a highly motivated researcher, holding an undergraduate degree in nano-engineering, physics, material science, electrical engineering, or related. You are interest in pMUT array design and acoustic characterization. Experience in medical imaging is a plus. It is expected that you will work at labs and present results regularly.  You are a team player and have good communication skills as you will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team spanning several imec departments. Given the international character of imec, an excellent knowledge of English is a must.


Required background: nano-engineering, physics, materials science or electrical engineering with strong affinity for device physics; Experience in image sensors is a plus
Type of work: 20% literature study, 50% modelling and design, 30% characterization
