Postdoc Exploratory Topological Insulators based on oxides materials, a DFT analysis

Research & development - Leuven | More than two weeks ago

Towards stable topological insulating compound, using DFT calculations.

Postdoc Exploratory Topological Insulators based on oxides materials, a DFT analysis (for PhD degree holders in physics, or material science)

What you will do

Imec is currently investing heavily into exploratory and emerging materials like topological insulators (TI) which could potentially enable a large variety of new functionalities towards fault tolerant qubits for quantum computing applications. There is a strong need to better understand and control these emerging materials and their interfaces, as well as to explore new device schemes.

This is a postdoc in the framework of an ERC Consolidator project entitled NOTICE (Novel Oxides and Topological Interfaces for Quantum Computing Electronics). Atomistic modeling approaches will be used to understand the topological insulating properties in Bismuth-based perovskite oxides.

In this postdoc, you will:

  • be responsible, using Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, for gaining fundamental insights in terms of electronic structure of Bi-based perovskite oxides (and of their interfaces). This requires investigating the function of doping and stoichiometry, the orbital inversion of the states and the signature of the conductive topological surface states.
  • be responsible to provide more fundamental insights in the behavior of topological surface states with superconducting proximity. In particular, you will investigate the evolution of the topological states at the TI/SC interface formed by n/p doped Bi-perovskites heterostructures.
  • study the polarity from the wavefunction of the TI/SC heterostructure. This will enable to investigate the protection of the topological interfacial states in the ideal case with perfect heterointerface.
  • add strain and defects at the interfaces to deepen our understanding of how external strain sources impact those systems. The engineering of the topological interfaces in complex material stacks will help unraveling uncharted territories where interface physics can be taken advantage of.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a competitive salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

  • Within this multiscale cross-disciplinary project, you will be part of a large imec team working in collaboration with academic research centers as well as with industrial partners and therefore good team player skills are desired.
  • With your PhD in Physics or Material Science and your proven in-depth knowledge in the field of solid-state, semiconductor and topological insulators material physics, experience with DFT simulations, and good programming skills (e.g. Python) you are our ideal candidate.
  • Your eagerness to obtain exciting results and to learn will be for us the icing on the cake.
