Metrology Engineer Scanning Probe Microscopy and Probe Development

What you will do

To strengthen both our research and service efforts, the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) team is looking for a Metrology Engineer specialized in Scanning Probe Microscopy and Probe Development. As a Metrology Engineer, he/she will become an expert in SPM and work closely with internal and external customers to understand and address their SPM related metrology needs, and deliver results and solutions in response to their requests. On top of that, he/she will also be involved in the SPM research by designing, developing, testing and implementing novel SPM and probe approaches and concepts and their underlying physics. The work will consist of experimental work in our dedicated Analysis Lab (sample preparation, measurements, etc.) and cleanroom (wafer processing involving microfabrication techniques such as lithography, etching and deposition) as well as data analysis and interaction with the customers, the SPM team and the MCA department. Moreover linking SPM-metrology with the developments of semiconductor technology, does require an engagement into keeping abreast of recent technological evolutions and trends.

After intense on the job training, your primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Become an SPM and probe expert and make your expertise available to the imec programs and your colleagues.
  • Define and execute an experimental plan to address the customer’s research questions and maintain a close interaction with the customer from start to finish.
  • Perform sample and probe preparation and high-quality (electrical) AFM measurements in a tight schedule.
  • Thoroughly analyze, interpret and report the obtained data based on the customers input.
  • Interact with internal and external customers in an efficient, user friendly manner.
  • Be involved in and push the research towards new AFM and probe based concepts and approaches by designing and performing experiments, stay up-to-date with literature, and analyzing results.
  • Manage the operation of SPM (related) tools, the interaction with the manufacturers, and the testing of fabricated probes.

Who you are

  • You have a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, or Electronic Engineering.
  • Given the challenging and innovative environment, you have a “can do” attitude combined with a large drive for results and are not afraid to take on new challenges.
  • You are customer oriented and can work/communicate well within a team.
  • You can take initiative and work independently.
  • Since you will be working in a highly international environment, fluency in English is essential.
  • Previous experience with SPM tools and/or semiconductor technology is a plus but not required.
