Develop microfabrication and packaging technologies for smart optical microsystems

Microfabrication Process Engineer

What you will do

The imec-CMST research group, located at Ghent University, is specializing in packaging & integration technology for electronic and photonic integrated circuits, allowing for novel smart microsystem applications. Examples are low-cost biosensors for use at the point-of-care, sensors for the detection of contaminants in water based on mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy, or miniature sensors for aerospace composites manufacturing.
As a Microfabrication Process Engineer, you will be responsible for the development of novel microfabrication and packaging processes within the cleanroom facilities, in close collaboration with a team of process operators. As you will focus on optical microsystem applications, you will frequently interact with photonic engineers. You will develop different process technologies for specific optical microsystems, including:
  • ultrafast laser direct writing for defining 3D micro-opto-mechanical structures in glass
  • conformal nano-imprint lithography for defining nanophotonic gratings in polymers
  • dry etching of semiconductor micro-lenses
  • deposition and fine-line patterning of metal interconnects
  • aerosol jet printing of metal conductors on 3D topography
  • low-temperature soldering
You will carry out this work in collaboration with external partners, both universities, research institutes and companies. Your responsibilities will be:
  • Monitor scientific progress within the microfabrication and packaging domain, as inspiration for new internal developments.
  • Conceive novel concepts for integration of electronic and photonic chips, exploiting the technological capabilities within the cleanroom.
  • Design new interfaces for coupling to photonic integrated circuits, with support of photonic engineers.
  • Design process and layout experiments driving microfabrication technology development.
  • Test, evaluate and qualify the developed integration and packaging solution (optical/mechanical/reliability).
  • Drive project execution by interacting with photonic and electronic engineers within imec-CMST, as well as with external partners.
  • Document and report to internal and external stakeholders including imec’s partners and customers.
  • Report to the scientific community at conferences or in scientific journals.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers at laboratory in Ghent, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.
We are proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.
We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a competitive salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

  • You have a Ph.D. of Science in Electronics Engineering, Photonics Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • We need your 4+ years hands-on experience in microfabrication process development.
  • We value your experience of assembly and packaging (flip chip, wire bonding, wafer-level packaging, …).
  • Your hands-on experience with optical design software, such as Zemax, Lumerical, Synopsys (RSoft, Code V), is a plus.
  • You are an enthusiastic team player, yet able to independently solve complex problems with limited supervision.
  • We need your excellent English communication skills and willingness to work in a multicultural environment.
