New techniques for sample preparation using dielectrophoresis in microfluidic devices

The student is expected to evaluate the performance of dielectrophoretic capture of biomolecules in different condition, through a design of experiment, and develop the basis for the new method. 

Dielectrophoresis has been amply used as an alternative to manipulate molecules without electric charge but despite large progress in aqueous media, the behavior of nucleic acid in organic solvent and aqueous:organic mixtures has not been explored, preventing its use in application within broad chemical and pharmaceutical industries. We intend to explore this potential in the development of new sample preparation and analytical techniques, with a focus on nucleic acids. More specifically, the student is expected to evaluate the performance different condition, through a design of experiment, and develop the basis for the new method.
