To develop biosensors using biology in our OnePlanet Research Center in Wageningen

Optical / Electrical Biosensor Engineer

What you will do

As an Optical / Electrical Biosensor Engineer you will develop and design the optical and/or electrical readout of a cellular biosensor. A cellular biosensor comprises a detector surface that contains cellular organisms that recognize the biomolecules of interest plus an electrical or optical readout of these cells. The cells on the detector surface convert difficult-to-measure molecules to signals that are easier to measure units, for example, light. The cell’s DNA contains instructions set for the cell to which molecule it needs to respond and the type of signal it should generate. With the continuous increasing in-depth understanding of cellular biology and the expanding synthetic biology toolbox with the high-end electrical and integrated optical sensor technology of imec, these types of sensors will reach the level of real applications.
As an Optical / Electrical Biosensor Engineer, you have a background in electronics and optics and can apply this in a creative way to design a sensitive readout of the cellular detector surface. Besides know-how in designing the optical and electrical components of the detector, you have basic knowledge of surface chemistry and biology to be able to communicate with synthetic biology and chemistry experts.

Your tasks will include:

  • Develop and design the optical and/or electrical readouts of cellular biosensors.
  • Interact and work in a multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists, other sensor application engineers, researchers etc.
  • Set-up and perform tests and validate them in lab environment.
  • Design methods to produce the cellular sensors (combined readout + detector cells).
  • Participate in publications at conferences and journals.
