PhD position: Development of an ingestible sensor

What you will do

This PhD project is part of the ingestible sensing project within the OnePlanet Research Centre. This is a multidisciplinary collaboration between imec, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and Radboud University. We use the latest chip and digital technology to create a society in which everyone can live a healthy life and has access to good and sufficient food. 
Ingestible sensors have the potential to non-invasively measure biomarkers and metabolites in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Using such electronic smart pills equipped with sensors will give novel insights into gut processes, help with early diagnosis and screening for diseases, and aid personalized nutrition. The project is highly interdisciplinary involving organic chemistry, surface chemistry and biocatalysis and therefore strongly relies on teamwork and collaboration as the laboratory work will take place in the labs of all three project partners       

The project is a collaboration of imec, the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at Wageningen University & Research, and the Synthetic Organic Chemistry group at Radboud University in Nijmegen.

Who you are

  • You have a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Molecular Life Sciences or a related field.
  • You have preferably knowledge and experience with (bio)organic synthesis, surface functionalization, and/or biocatalysis.
  • You have an affinity and/or experience with electroanalytical chemistry.
  • You are a team player and have strong communications skills.
  • You are able to speak/write in English in scientific and academic settings.
  • You work independently, have a strong feeling of responsibility, and can commit to milestones of a research plan.
