Mm-wave radar imaging towards cm-scale 3D resolution.

Postdoctoral Researcher Mm-wave Imaging Radar

What you will do

We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher with significant experience in MIMO radar architecture and processing to join our millimeter-wave radar team.

Imec has a substantial and growing program on millimeter-wave radar sensors covering a broad range of application domains such as automotive, security, professional and home/consumer.  Our activities include the complete implementation in a CMOS System-on-a-Chip (SoC) of the millimeter-wave front-end, ADC and high-speed digital signal processing. Our designs exploit frequency bands such as 60, 79 and 140GHz where large bandwidths allow to approach the cm-scale range resolution. The angular resolution of a radar depends on the antenna size and it is typically harder to achieve cm-scale cross-range resolution, even at mm-wave. One approach to increase the angular resolution is the MIMO-radar principle that can produce relatively large virtual arrays with a modest number of physical antennas.

As our new postdoctoral researcher mm-wave Imaging Radar, you will help us to develop a large imaging MIMO radar based on tens of the imec 140GHz radar chips. You will have to find a suitable architecture to achieve 3D imaging with a resolution of 1cm in the three dimension (1cm3 cubelets), which is beyond state of the art both in terms of resolution and for this carrier frequency. Based on your deep understanding and knowledge of high resolution radars, you are expected to bring innovations at all levels, including architecture, signals processing and implementation (algorithmic trade-offs). This will include defining the array size and geometries, and the MIMO imaging radar processing. You will review the literature on 3D imaging algorithms and propose innovative algorithms improving on the state-of-the art. An equally important aspect of this work is to be able to embed the first steps of the processing in firmware, which may include FPGAs and/or ARM processors. Further post-processing algorithms will also be needed to enhance the 3D image quality (background removal, clutter elimination, contrast enhancement, etc...). The goal will be to approach real-time imaging. This work will be based in Leuven and coordinated with an imec team in the US.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.
We are proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.
We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a competitive salary.

Who you are

  • You have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, with a strong background in radar architectures, signal processing and super-resolution algorithms.
  • You are very familiar with beamforming, MIMO radar and SAR radar processing, imaging radar processing.
  • We are looking for your strong experience with embedded signal processing. Experience in image processing and machine learning is a plus.
  • We value your proficiency in Matlab, C/C++ and Python. VHDL knowledge is a strong plus.
  • We need your excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • You can easily integrate in a multidisciplinary team within a global context.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
