Protein Researcher

What you will do

Proteins are the building blocks of life. But how they are produced and consumed by modern society is no longer sustainable. Therefore, a transition from animal proteins to plant-based proteins is vital. At OnePlanet Research Center we are growing our food processing research line which aims to develop sensing solutions for measuring protein quality and composition. As a Protein Researcher, you are playing a central role in the development of these solutions. You have the domain knowledge to define a strategy for protein quality and composition monitoring in liquid food product streams and ingredients. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of food scientists, sensing experts, chemists, and device developers. We need you as a Protein Researcher to be part of our multidisciplinary team to:

• Perform research and development to discover new ways to monitor protein quality and protein composition in food product streams.
• Closely collaborate with the sensor development team to co-develop new sensing concepts based on your experience in food science.
• Validate devices in the lab environment and in collaboration with external partners.
• Perform and coordinate measurements in a lab environment.
• Perform statistical analysis on acquired data sets.
• Together with your team, plan activities and adjust the planning according to progress and priorities.
• Maintain and manage a comprehensive understanding of the domain knowledge related to food science and proteins, identify the state of the art, its gaps, and benchmark new ideas for sensor development.
• Share domain knowledge with other OnePlanet teams and in technical discussions with external partners.
• Report the scientific results internally, to customers, and disseminate them externally as inventions or (scientific) publications.

Who you are

• A M.Sc. or Ph.D. in food technology, food chemistry, dairy science, or equivalent. Preferably with years of experience in the food industry (must in case of M.Sc).
• Knowledge of protein structure-function relationship.
• Experience in statistical data analysis and experimental design.
• Experience working in a lab environment and drive to work hands-on.
• Experience with spectroscopic techniques (e.g., UV/VIS, NIRS, SWIR, MIR, Raman, etc.) is preferred.
• Affinity with protein transition and motivated to learn about new sensor concepts. You are a quick learner interested in acquiring new skills and competencies.
• Able to deal with ambiguity in an uncertain research process. You see changes as an opportunity to learn and grow and adapt the research course considering boundary conditions and resources at hand.
• Able to take initiative and responsibility for team’s success, which means thinking pro-actively, working independently and having a creative and solving problem attitude are attributes that define yourself.
• Your communication skills in English (written and spoken) are excellent.
