Perform quick simulation of different main memory sizes and estimate PPAC imapct without trading-off accuracy.

Computer energy consumption is forecasted to exceed global energy production in 2040 (Semiconductor Ind. Assoc., 2015). A large factor (~20% and increasing) of this power is attributed to the main memory in those computers, using DRAM technology. At imec, we are developing a cross-layer simulator framework intended to explore novel memory technologies and architectures, to evaluate their effect on the performance and energy usage of future computer systems and applications. These new memory technologies, such as alternative DRAM with high retention time, have the potential to save a significant amount of energy in data centers around the globe.

As part of this simulator framework, we are developing a pseudo memory compiler for main memory, which will help in estimating the power performance area (PPA) for different size of main memory. The pseudo memory compiler helps in doing quick simulation of large memories without losing the accuracy. Different types of main memories like DRAM, IGZO-DRAM will be explored using this compiler.

In this work the candidate will interact with different imec groups working on technology development, material selection, TCAD simulation, and design to identify the challenges and opportunities of main memories. The primary objective is to develop pseudo memory compiler that will be used to emulate the main memory architecture and estimate the PPA based on a given memory size. The input to compiler will be given by the user, with an option of choosing different main memory type.
