Research Intern, Distributed Artificial Intelligence

Imec USA is looking for a PhD student intern for an exciting new research program on Low power distributed and collaborative artificial intelligence (AI) leveraging on-device learning at our Berkeley location in California, for Summer 2021.

What you will do

  • Develop novel training algorithms that enable large scale distributed training over edge devices communicating over dynamic peer-to-peer wireless networks.
  • Explore, evaluate and propose innovative algorithmic solutions to various bottlenecks such as need for synchronous updates and how to make distributed learning algorithms robust to communication failures.
  • Evaluate and extend current communication efficient distributed-SGD algorithms beyond supervised learning towards reinforcement learning tasks as well.

Key Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in PhD program in a top university in a relevant discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • Experience with:
    *Strong grasp of fundamentals of optimization and experience developing novel distributed optimization algorithms.
    *Good knowledge of deep generative and deep reinforcement learning algorithms
    *Experience working with state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch and TensorFLow.
    *Working knowledge of parallel and multi-threaded programming
    *Proficiency in programming with Python
  • Experience working in R&D environments with successful publications, patents or both is preferred
  • Can present your research effectively at conferences and in other technical forums.
  • Highly motivated to work in a research environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
