Research & development - Gent | More than two weeks ago
In the EU-funded SignON project (signon-project.eu), we are developing a translation app that will eventually be able to translate sign language (in both directions) between 5 European sign languages and 4 European spoken/written languages. This project is unique because all developments are done in close collaboration with teh end users.
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 8,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
Access to information is a human right. In a globalised world, this means: communication accross language barriers. Approximately one in a thousand people in the EU communicate through one of the 31 Sign languages used in Europe. Because most hearing people do not know any sign language, communication between hearing and deaf people is not always obvious.
