Senior Researcher Sensor Technology & Efficient Artificial Intelligence
What you will do

Dive into the challenge of optimizing the combination of diverse sensor technologies to create robust and efficient full-stack perception systems, shaping the future of AI-driven features in areas such as autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems.
This research position is situated within the AI&Data department, from which you will contribute to tackling the challenges described above. This includes the exploration, benchmarking and modeling of novel sensor or compute technology, the development of novel (more robust and efficient) AI-based architectures and algorithms that and the creation of integrated systems and pipelines that bring of all this in operation. It will be key to work together with different teams (both hardware, sensor development, and other AI teams) to jointly come up with a full stack solution. While your work is mostly situated at the software and algorithmic level, you will also need to be able to understand the concept of sensor and hardware technology. This work will mostly be executed in the context of collaborative R&D projects. Some of the research questions we are interested in solving are on how to improve overall application accuracy by multi-modal sensor fusion, or how to increase robustness of the perception pipeline. We would like to explore if these algorithms and pipeline benefit from AI accelerator technology and how to efficiently simulate novel sensor concepts.

You will work with teams from various parts of imec, working in a highly applied way towards contributions related to imec’s incubating AI and automotive program. You will also contribute to the definition of the research roadmap, new research projects, writing high quality research publications, and get to work in an growing but ambitious team.
You will join the Sensor Fusion and Edge team, which part of the larger AI team of the AI&Data department. The team and department is multidisciplinary and highly international, composed of talent with skills in AI algorithms, sensor fusion techniques, MLOps pipelines and general application development. The AI&Data department consists of around 150 people, operating from the imec offices in Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven. Its main emphasis is on software/hardware co-design and your work will be part of an ongoing effort for disruptive innovation through creative collaboration between the hardware and software departments at imec.
Who you are
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field
- Strong background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.
- Experience in developing and implementing multi-modal AI algorithms and perception pipelines.
- Familiarity with sensor fusion, signal processing, and large-scale simulation.
- Understanding of hardware and sensor technologies, especially in the context of AI applications. Previous expertise in hardware software co-design is a plus.
- Experience with assessing the impact of new technologies on algorithmic and application levels, potentially through simulation.
- You are a team player with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including hardware development, sensor development, and other AI-teams.
- You are a responsible, communicative and flexible person.
