Student Project: Development of Data Processing Algorithms for Radar-based Long-Term Health Monitoring

What you will do

Radar technologies have been recently investigated as an emerging measurement technique in healthcare, able to  operate without any user involvement, which is a strong asset in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications due to the targeted population (e.g., subjects in cognitive decline) and it is also in line with the development of the Internet of the Things.

Although radar techniques are fundamental for high sensitivity contactless target detection, data processing techniques represent a key factor in developing healthcare applications and to solve several challenges that the real situations impose. This project focuses on the investigation and development or improvement of innovative data processing algorithms aiming at multi-people localization/tracking and vital signs monitoring (heartrate and respiration), meeting also conflicting boundary conditions (body random movements, vibrations, undesired reflections, accuracy, positioning, speed detection, …).

The advanced algorithms will be tested using IMEC-Holst Centre radar prototypes.

  • Literature survey of the current state-of-the-art on radar-based vital signs monitoring and localization/tracking algorithms (including algorithms previously developed at IMEC & Holst Centre).
  • Developing or improving algorithm(s) for radar-based health monitoring under real condition:
    - Vital signs Monitoring (heartbeat, heartbeat variability, respiration rate, respiration variability).
    - Localization/Tracking.
  • Collect measurements to validate the improved algorithm(s) using IMEC-Holst Centre radar-based system.
  • Testing and analyzing the performance of the implemented algorithm.
  • Helping Imec to improve current state of the art on radar-based health monitoring.
  • Reporting and documentation at IMEC-Holst Centre.
  • (Option) submit the work to a high-impact publication.

Who you are

  • MSc in Systems and Control / Computer Science and Engineering / Electrical Engineering.
  • Available for 6-9-12 months.
  • Experience with signal processing (ICA, ...) and parameter estimation techniques (MUSIC, ...).
  • Proven experience with MATLAB.
  • Previous experience in radar signal processing is an added plus.
  • Motivated student eager to work independently and expand knowledge in the field.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
