Student project: Highly efficient wideband transmitter for implantable applications

What you will do

Implantable sensors enable the sensing of parameters inside the human body, e.g., endoscopy imaging. This gives a world of information about the human body that cannot be obtained with external sensors. Connecting these sensors with a wire poses a risk for the body, such as infections. Therefore, wireless data transfer is crucial.

These implantable sensors need a transmitter for information transfer to the outside world. Because of the limited size, the battery is very small or even absent. Hence, the transmitter needs to be extremely efficient.

This project is aimed at evaluating different transmitter topologies for implantable sensors. One of the possible topologies is the I/Q sharing topology. It has recently gained a lot of attention and has attractive characteristics such as high bandwidth and high efficiency.

Tasks:

  • Literature survey on transmitters and the specific needs of implantable transmitters.
  • Background study on current transmitter design in imec - Holst Centre.
  • Investigation of highly efficient transmitters.
  • Schematic and layout design of selected architecture;(Optional) implementation and measurement of the test-chip.
  • Thesis writing and documentation in imec-Holst Centre.

Who you are

  • Master’s student in Electrical Engineering.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of designing circuits using CMOS transistors.
  • Structured way of reporting, both orally and written.
  • Motivated student eager to work independently and expand knowledge in the field.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
