OnePlanet Research Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboudumc and imec. We use the latest chip and digital technology to create a society in which everyone can live a healthy life and has access to healthy and sustainable food. We initiate fundamental and applied research, groundbreaking innovations and smart product applications.

What you will do

In this project we want to create an in-silico model of the human gastrointestinal tract. We will explore the anatomical and functional variation between people and between different parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

In the future, this model can help to study the relationship between gut anatomy and the functional status of the digestive system. In addition, the model can be used as input for our ingestible sensing research program, to help determining the most probable location of our smart pills within the GI tract.

In the first part of the project, a literature study will be performed to gather known values of physiological GI variables (for example bowel length, stomach size, and pH values). Gut characteristics will also be correlated to anthropometric features such as body height.

In the second part of the project, additional data will be collected to study the interpersonal anatomical variation. This data could include existing 3D models, existing medical images, or newly acquired MRI images. Image analysis strategies will be developed to segment and analyze the GI tract.

All collected and generated data will be combined into a comprehensive digital gut model.  

Your tasks:

  • Create a digital model of the gastrointestinal tract based on a literature study.
  • Determine the anatomical variation between people based on available or collected images/models.
  • Link body characteristics to GI dimensions.
  • Create an image analysis strategy to segment the GI tract.

Who you are

  • You are a Msc student in Biomedical Engineering, Technical Medicine, or similar field.
  • You are available for a period of 6 months.
  • Experience with medical imaging and Matlab or Python is required.
  • Knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology is a plus.
  • Entitled to do an internship in the Netherlands.
  • Motivated student eager to work independently and expand knowledge in the field.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
