Validation of digital through-clothing ECG

Help realize a novel and versatile digital sensor that can measure electrical heart activity through clothing.

Imec has developed technology for measuring capacitively the electrocardiogram (ECG) – as well as respiration - through clothing. This technology and the associated algorithms are continuously being improved and new approaches and applications being explored.

Recently imec has been working on a digital acquisition system for such through-clothing ECG. The proposed thesis topic concerns the validation and optimization of this new digital acquisition of the electrocardiogram, in various real world form factors such as in cars (e.g. car seat, steering wheel, ..), beds (e.g. for sleep monitoring or hospital patient monitoring), office chairs (e.g. for stress monitoring) or clothing.

This work will involve hands-on work with hardware, as well as firmware in C, and signal acquisition and low-level signal processing in Python and Matlab.

Skills required: mixed signal (analog and digital) electronic circuit knowledge, test and measurement skills, embedded microcontroller firmware programming in C, at least basic experience with Python and Matlab, hands-on attitude​
