Postdoctoral Researcher on Single Molecule Surface Functionalization

The capability of placing single biomolecules on nanoelectronic devices manufactured on Si wafers is of contemporary interest and is crucial for the advancement of lab-on-chip technologies that operate at the single molecule level. The controlled placement of single biomolecules involves not only the surface chemistry used to bind the targeted biomolecules on the sensor surface and anti-biofouling treatments, but also nanoscale chemical and physical approaches to control the number and location of the deposited biomolecules.
To immobilize single biomolecules on various sensor surfaces a wide range of activities come into play. You will explore and develop different nanoscale surface patterning methodologies on silicon wafers compatible with state-of-the-art mass-manufacturing processes for CMOS technology. Surface chemistry will be identified and tailored to enable linking single molecules of interest to the nanoscale sensor sensing area. Non-specific binding is to be avoided. The surface adjacent to the sensing area is important as well as it should prevent biofouling. Beyond the techniques based on nano-scale patterning typically carried out on silicon wafers we aim to create out-of-the-box methods particularly suited for nanoscale single biomolecule placement on surfaces. Nanodevices will be fabricated in the state-of-the-art imec facilities. The single molecule placement methods will be characterized using single molecule metrology such as fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. This challenging activity will take place in an international, multidisciplinary team context.
You have a PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics or nano-sciences. You have a strong and wide interest in (bio)chemistry, physics and nanosciences.
Having knowledge and experience in surface chemistry, advanced nanoscale wafer patterning techniques, or surface characterization techniques is regarded as a key asset. Having extensive knowledge and experience with single molecule fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy or other characterization techniques that can resolve single molecules is considered a plus. You keep abreast of cutting-edge advances in the different fields of your work
You are a hands-on, creative and result-oriented team player. You organize swiftly and take initiative. You have excellent communication skills. You will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of imec researchers, PhD students and industry researchers. Excellent knowledge of English is a must.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
