Design of a Virtual Reality (VR) set-up for neuroscientific research

The student will design and build a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) set-up for laboratory mice, in which the mice will be given certain odorants while navigating their environment.

In this project, the student will design a novel behavioral set-up to study how laboratory mice navigate an environment using their sense of smell. In a first step, the student will build a state-of-the-art virtual-reality (VR) set-up to simulate navigation. As a second step, the student will then integrate odorant delivery in the setup.The student will investigate how mice respond to unexpected, novel odorants that are introduced at certain positions in the VR and how they remember odorant-position combinations. If interested, the student can be trained to perform high-density multi-electrode recordings of neuronal activity while animals are navigating. Provided a positive experimental evaluation of the setup, we aim for a publication.

Required degree: Master of Science, Master of Engineering Science, Master of Engineering Technology, Master of Bioengineering

Required background: Physics, Computer Science, Biomedical engineering, Bioscience Engineering
