High-throughput mm-wave Communications for 5G
After the success of 4G LTE communication technologies, additional bandwidth is the only way to sustain an ever-increasing demand for wireless communications. One option chosen in 5G is to build on higher carrier frequencies, known as mm-waves, where a large amount of bandwidth is available.
Several challenges are associated with mm-waves for 5G. The modulation and frame format has been improved, various beamforming and multi-user methods are used. On the other hand, higher carrier frequency also means higher sensitivity to transceiver non-idealities.
To analyze the system performance, a baseband simulator is required. Such simulation environments have been developed at IMEC for other standards. The simulator extension towards 5G-NR will be a first part of this thesis. It will include the new features mentioned above (multi-stream/multi-user operation, wider bandwidths, new modulations) as well as the related elements from the standard such as a flexible frame structure and preamble, new beamforming protocols, and multiple-access methods.
A second part of the thesis will exploit the 5G-NR simulator to test different modes and develop algorithmic solutions for receiver processing and beamforming. The goal will be to optimize performances under both ideal conditions and in the presence of transceiver non- idealities such as non-linearities, phase noise, IQ imbalance, etc..
The successful candidate must show a strong understanding of wireless communications, radio transceivers and signal processing and an interest in anticipating future standards. Proficiency with Matlab is a must.
