In vitro neuronal networks are employed to model brain function and neurological disease states. Electrophysiological signals recorded from neuronal networks provide distinctive information on the nature of the network and can be employed to unravel mechanisms of relevant neurodegenerative diseases. However, translation from the raw signals to biologically meaningful results is not straightforward and advanced computing methods are often necessary. At imec, we have developed a state-of-the-art high-density CMOS multielectrode array which can record from 1024 sites simultaneously using subcellular-sized electrodes. This platform collects large amounts of data on neuronal recordings which later need to be postprocessed in order to be interpreted. Typically, the postprocessing involves spike detection and sorting, clustering and pattern recognition techniques. The student will be responsible for developing robust algorithms which can help scientists extracting relevant information from big data in a fast and efficient manner.
