Design and explore imec's flexible technology

Large area electronics are getting more and more attention over the last years, ever since the discovery of new high performing thin-film semiconductors like a-In-Ga-Zn-O. These new semiconductors exhibit mobilities beyond 10cm²/Vs and allow for integration directly on a flexible circuits for applications like RFID and NFC tags. There has been an incredible boom in the number of applications, going from flexible displays and imagers to low cost packaging tags for IoT.

Research towards thin-film transistor (TFT) technologies based on In-Ga-Zn-O have gained an increased maturity and attractive performance characteristics enabling analog signal processing and increasingly more complex systems such as analog to digital converters (ADC) on flexible substrates. Analog signal conversion based on In-Ga-Zn-O TFTs can be used as a basic building block for fingerprint sensor arrays integrated on mobile AMOLED displays. Other key building blocks for this application case next to the ADC are in-panel charge sense amplifiers (CSA) and multiplexers (MUX). This will reduce finally the number of connections towards off-panel electronics.

You, as a student, will incrementally improve the design and layout of the key blocks for the charge-sense to digital (CSD) system and characterize in a lab enviroment the in-house state-of-the-art fabricated samples. The final ambition is to integrate the CSD system with sensor arrays and characterize in a real environment. You will be asked to report on the results and present your progress to the group. You have the opportunity to work in a world-class design group in thin-film electronics, with the prospect of your results being used for the years to come.
