Intern, Photonic Integrated Circuit Design (Summer)

What you will do

Imec, USA is looking for a graduate level Silicon Photonics Circuit Design intern for a optical communications project. In this role you will be responsible for the functional and architectural design of in-house photonic building blocks, layout design, using PDK circuit level simulation. Your responsibilities include:

  • Develop customized PDK that’s compatible with Imec (or other foundries) technology 
  • Simulate transceiver circuit with circuit-level tool using Imec (or other foundries) compact model library
  • Use Imec (or other foundries) PDK to construct photonic layout
  • Interact with third-part packaging service provider for layout adjustment 
  • Reporting to colleagues and clients 
  • Publishing in international journals and contributing to major conferences

Who you are

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant Master’s or PhD program in a top university in a relevant discipline such as Photonics, Electronics or Physics. 
  • Experience in commercial software for photonic component design such as Lumerical, Fimmwave, Rsoft, CST, COMSOL 
  • Familiar with photonic components and can design some basic passive devices from scratch 
  • Experience with photonic layout tool and circuit level simulation with compact model library is a plus
  • Full design flow and characterization experience for tapeout on Si, SiN or III/V platform (with university cleanroom or PIC foundry) is a strong plus
  • Experience using PDK is ideal
  • Experience with active photonics elements (such as laser integration, modulator, photodetector and thermal phase shifter) is a bonus
  • Experience with PIC packaging is preferred
  • Experience working in R&D environments with successful publications, patents or both is preferred
  • Can present your research effectively at conferences and in other technical forums
  • Highly motivated to work in a research environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

*This internship can be extended depending on the student's availability​
