Job content

Within the institute for materials research (IMO-IMOMEC) of Hasselt University there is a PhD position in the domain of thin film photovoltaic (PV) solar cells.

A realistic approach to increase the efficiency of PV devices above the Shockley-Queisser single-junction limit is the construction of tandem devices. This PhD focuses on the development of very high efficiency thin-film perovskite on chalcogenide (CuIn(Ga)Se2 = CI(G)S) tandem devices; where a more ideal band gap combination (i.e. 1.6-1.7 eV top solar cell + 1.0 eV bottom solar cell) can be applied as compared to perovskite on silicon (Si, with band gap = 1.1 eV) tandem structures. You will use the combined technology strengths of the chalcogenide and perovskite thin-film laboratories for the development of such high-efficiency tandem devices. This research will be performed in the EnergyVille laboratories in Genk, in collaboration with imec.

Besides being involved in the research and generation of scientific outputs, it is expected that you actively participate in the educational and outreach tasks of the faculty of Engineering Technology.
 You will become part of international research networks as Energyville (www.energyville.be) and Solliance (www.solliance.eu). Therefore, an (international) driver's license is an asset.

Profile

  • You hold a master or engineering degree in physics, materials sciences, chemistry (or equivalent). Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.
  • You are able to work independently and are eager to take initiative and responsibility;
  • You are motivated to contribute to the didactic and outreach tasks of the faculty of Engineering Technology and you are able to arouse students' enthusiasm;
  • You have experience with experimental work, are able to present scientific results, and have excellent reporting skills.
  • A first scientific publication is an asset;
  • You have the necessary qualities to function within an international team: i.e. you are open to or have experience with other cultures, you have a broad interest in the world/science;
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills in English are required, and international experience (Erasmus, internship abroad) is an asset;
  • You have knowledge of the field of photovoltaics and experience in the domain. Being acquainted with PV fundamentals is an asset;
  • You have a problem-solving attitude and a strong desire to stay up to date with recent developments;

Offer

You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
Scholarship for a period of 2 x 2 years, after positive intermediate evaluation.

Selection procedure

You can only apply online up to and including 21 February 2020.
The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file and an interview.
All interested applicants are invited to submit an application package including but not limited to 1. Motivation letter. 2. CV. 3. A self-written scientific text of 1-2 pages, positioning perovskite-on-chalcogenide tandem solar cells as compared to other tandem solar cells and giving an overview of recent 2-terminal perovskite-on-chalcogenide tandem development. A preselection is conducted first based on the application package and further followed by an interview with few candidates for final selection. Please be advised that applications without research proposal are not considered for further evaluation.
