Postdoctoral Researcher Design Space Exploration for Next-generation Low Power, High Density MRAM
What you will do
New non-volatile memory technologies such as magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) are emerging as effective alternatives to SRAM and DRAM. This because of their high speed, high efficiency and extreme scalability. MTJs, the fundamental building blocks of MRAM devices, are written by means of spin transfer torque (STT), spin orbit torque (SOT) or other novel mechanisms. The critical goals of the technology are to increase switching speed, reduce switching current and enhance the reliability of said devices be means of materials engineering, stack and device design, or process optimization.
In this job, you will actively contribute to this development in modeling and designing new MRAM stacks by means of micromagnetic simulations. The key goals of the project will be:
- Understanding and exploiting the impact of interlayer exchange and dipolar field interactions
- Material properties optimization to maximize device performances
- Process induced damage impact on scaled devices.
This would directly input into optimization of device fabrication in Imec’s 300mm MRAM platform, and benchmarked to the state-of-the-art technology. The scope of the job will involve close collaboration with thin film and device teams to devise advanced solutions for next generation low power memory applications.

Who you are
- You have a PhD in one of the following areas - Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Physics, Material Science.
- We appreciate your in-depth knowledge of magnetism theory and magnetic thin films and strong experience in micromagnetic simulation (OOMMF, Mumax...), programming (MATLAB, Python...).
- Knowledge and working experience in physical simulation software such as COMSOL is a strong plus. The same is true for a background in MRAM devices and magnetic thin film metrology.
- We are looking for an enthusiastic and team-oriented candidate. We value your strong communication and eagerness to learn and implement.
- Given the international character of imec, a fluent knowledge of English is necessary.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
