Postdoctoral Researcher on Holographic Optics for AR and MR
Imec is the world-leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies. The combination of our widely acclaimed leadership in microchip technology and profound software and ICT expertise is what makes us unique. By leveraging our world-class infrastructure and local and global ecosystem of partners across a multitude of industries, we create groundbreaking innovation in application domains such as healthcare, smart cities and mobility, logistics and manufacturing, and energy.
As a trusted partner for companies, start-ups and universities we bring together close to 3,500 brilliant minds from over 70 nationalities. Imec is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium and also has distributed R&D groups at a number of Flemish universities, in the Netherlands, Taiwan, USA, China, and offices in India and Japan. All of these particular traits make imec to be a top-class employer. To strengthen this position as a leading player in our field, we are looking for those passionate talents that make the difference! Currently we are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher on holographic optics for AR and MR.
The goal is for imec to acquire understanding of vision systems based on AM(O)LED displays, and optimize holographic optical elements that combine with imec’s present and future AMOLED displays (on glass, flex or Si). We perceive an increasing interest for augmented reality (AR) and mixed-reality (MR) applications. In the TFE business line, we have a program on AMOLED displays (and with Barco, we work on AM-LED displays). A better understanding of the optical part of vision systems is needed for us to move up in the value chain. For micro-lens optics, we collaborate with VUB. However, holographic optics has more potential than classical refractive optics, because it is planar, processing can be done by more conventional technologies (e.g. surface gratings) and a holographic lens array can selectively collimate specific light sources while remaining transparent for other light. We have at present insufficient knowledge on holographic optics at imec to address and optimize display vision system.
The subject of this postdoctoral position is the study of different holographic optical systems for AR and MR applications. AR/MR systems need to project images with high light intensity into the human retina, while remaining transparent to the eye for real-world scenes. The postdoctoral student will model and compare multiple architectural options for optical systems, focusing on designs optimized for the purpose of imaging (O)LED arrays, and including the specific emission characteristics of these sources. The systems can include various optical elements, such as waveguide structures, and collimating and projecting structures. Fabrication of the optical elements, e.g. using imprint or lithographic technologies, will be outsourced. The postdoctoral student will be responsible for the build-up of the optical setups needed for characterization after fabrication, as well as for these measurements. Finally, he/she will demonstrate a holographic vision system for smart glasses, by combination of the optimized optical system with dedicated (O)LED arrays.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
The applicant is expected to be creative and motivated with a PhD degree in physics or nanotechnology. He/she should have proven competence in optical simulations, holography, waveguiding and/or micro-lenses. Practical experience in the building of experimental optical characterization setups is required. The applicant is expected to have good English language skills.
