The IDLab research group of imec and the University of Antwerp is looking for a technical network expert within the context of its City of Things program.



The IDLab research group of imec and the University of Antwerp performs fundamental and applied research on internet technologies and data science. The overall IDLab research areas are machine learning and data mining; semantic intelligence; distributed intelligence for IoT; cloud and big data infrastructures; multimedia coding and delivery; wireless and fixed networking; electromagnetics, RF and high-speed circuits and systems. Within Antwerp, IDLab specifically focuses on wireless networking and distributed intelligence. IDLab has a unique research infrastructure used in numerous national and international collaborations.

IDLab collaborates with many universities and research centres worldwide and jointly develops advanced technologies with industry (R&D centers from international companies, Flanders’ top innovating large companies and SME’s, as well as numerous ambitious startups).

For further development of the IDLab distributed intelligence research cluster, we are looking for a post-doctoral researcher in the domain of distributed deep learning.

What you will do

Smart cities is a fast evolving new technology domain, where Internet of Things play a key role. Cities have important and very concrete questions with respect to how they should make their cities “smart”: which network technology should they use? What are the security considerations? What is THE smart city application? Where should you focus on now?

Within the City of Things ( team, we are looking for a junior network expert who is able to answer these city questions and advise them in the process of making their cities more sustainable and smart.

  • You will advise cities all over Flanders in the strategy to take in building a smart city. You pay particular attention towards the technical challenges with related to network design and Internet of Things.
  • You will work together with cities on concrete projects and smart city pilots.
  • You will present guidelines and recommendations on how the Flemish smart city ecosystem should evolve in the future.
  • Together with cities all over Flanders, you will co-design new smart applications to make their city more sustainable and smart.
  • You will aid our team in designing the new networks for future smart cities.
  • You have the ability to be part of the fast developing City of Things program within imec.

What we do for you

We offer a fully funded position in a challenging, stimulating and pleasant research environment, where you can contribute to the worldwide research on software components for Smart Cities. The work is done in close collaboration with national and international industry players and Flemish cities. You will join an enthusiastic team of researchers, post-docs and professors.

Who you are

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications and skills.

  • You have an engineering or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Electronics-ICT or Informatics (bachelor or Masters).
  • You have the ability to derive technical requirements from a non-technical problem, defined by a non-technical audience.
  • You have the analytical mindset to clearly identify the problem and the technical knowledge to present a technical solution to the problem.
  • You have a multi-disciplinary attitude, combing the expertise from different technical and non-technical profiles.
  • You have an interest in Internet of Things  and/or smart cities.
  • Knowledge of (wireless) networks and IoT platforms is a plus.
  • You are a team player and have strong communication skills.
  • Your English is fluent, both speaking and writing.
