University of Antwerp – imec IDLab Research group

The IDLab research group of imec performs fundamental and applied research on internet technologies and data science. IDLab is a joint research initiative between the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. The overall IDLab research areas are machine learning and data mining; semantic intelligence; distributed intelligence for IoT; cloud and big data infrastructures; multimedia coding and delivery; wireless and fixed networking; electromagnetics, RF and high-speed circuits and systems. IDLab has a unique research infrastructure used in numerous national and international collaborations. IDLab is a core research group of imec and a significant part of IDLab research activities are embedded in the University of Antwerp.  The research on wireless networking is a joint activity between the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. To support the research and prototyping activities of the IDLab wireless research cluster, we are looking for a software developer to strengthen our team. Concretely, you will assist PhD students and other researchers with the implementation of simulation tools, prototypes and demonstrators.

What you will do

  • You will help design and implement simulation tools to support the team’s researchers (e.g., based on the ns-3 network simulator).
  • You will develop embedded software for prototypes and demonstrators in the context of industry-driven research projects. You will work with IoT protocols stacks (e.g., OpenWSN), low-power development platforms (e.g., OpenMote, Zolertia REmote), and embedded microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino).
  • You will be responsible for the daily supervision of PhD and master students that perform research on this topic.
  • You will participate in national and European research projects (mostly in collaboration with industry). Some example projects our team is currently working on include IDEAL-IoT, CONAMO, MuSCLe-IoT, and MAGICIAN.

What we do for you

  • Starting date: between July and September 2018
  • Type of contract: full time (100%)
  • Employment: temporary assignment for 12 months with possible extension based on performance and availability of funding

Who you are

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Telecommunications Engineering, Informatics or equivalent.
  • Good programming skills, with at least basic experience in C and C++
  • Hands-on experience with embedded software development
  • Team player and have strong communication skills.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  • Knowledge about electronics design is a plus.
