Student project: Monitoring of weight loss surgery patients

What you will do

Obesity incidence levels are increasing worldwide, leading to many health problems such as cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Gastric surgery is more often used to induce weight loss to improve the wellbeing of the patient.

Within this project we will follow gastric surgery patients for over 1 year during their weight loss trajectory. Over the course of this year Imec will monitor heart rate, respiration and body composition using wearable devices. The goal of the project will be to link body weight, body composition measurements, respiration monitoring and heart rate information over the weight loss trajectory.

This thesis research includes the following steps: literature study to obtain an overview of the state of the art, cleaning of data and signal processing, data analysis, feature extraction and the development of machine learning algorithms. Within the project the student will be analyzing physiological data. During the project the student will interact with different experts on the topic. Finally, the student is expected to give a presentation and write a report. Depending on the results a journal publication should be prepared.

Tasks:

  • Literature study.
  • Signal processing.
  • Data analysis.
  • Machine learning.
