We will develop a system that uses inductive coupled resonators to delivers wideband telemetry and power simultaneously for implantable applications.

What you will do

Chips for implantable applications are buried under the skin, and has to be powered and communicate wirelessly to an externally unit. In addition, a reverse link (implant to
external) is required to transmit the sensor information to the external unit with a throughput up to 10Mbps in certain applications. The forward (external to implant) power link should be able to deliver sufficient amount of power, and its efficiency should not be significantly degraded by the reverse link. Typically, high reverse link throughput and high forward link efficiency in principle contradictory, in terms of the quality factor of the coil.

The project duration is of 12 months. This project can result, depending on maturity and performance, of the design in a tape-out of the designed circuits; part of the work will be spent in carrying out testing and characterization of the system. We target to publish the outcome of the project in high impact conference or journal. 

We seek very motivated candidates with electrical engineering and/or biomedical background, with strong knowledge of the RF and analog design workflow and acquainted with the Cadence tool chain.

The tasks in this project include: 

  • Literature survey on near-field telemetry and powering system.
  • Propose the architecture for system.
  • Schematic and layout design of selected architecture.
  • Implementation and measurement of the test-chip.
  • Thesis writing and documentation in imec-Netherlands.

  • Electrical Engineering Background with good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of analog design circuits using CMOS transistors.
  • Structured way of reporting, both orally and written.

  • Good written and verbal English skills.
