Image sensors are now everywhere. Continued development over the past decades has perfectioned image sensor technology and state-of-the-art imagers are reaching the theoretical limit of classical photography. Thanks to the evolution of information processing, now image sensors are even expanding their usages even further, from traditional color imaging using visible light to information gathering using near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR).
This tutorial reviews the trends in recent image sensor development starting with a brief explanation of its basic operating principle. In addition to this, we will walk through some of the recent advancements in NIR and SWIR image sensors.
