Advanced GeSi components for next-generation silicon photonics applications
Silicon photonics has enabled the integration of optical technologies on silicon semiconductors using conventional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technologies and approaches, combining the best of photonics and electronics. These photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that house complex optical systems, including lasers, modulators and more, on single chips reduce losses and energy consumption while enhancing performance relative to individual components. The EU-funded SIPHO-G project will develop ultrahigh-speed optical modulators and photodetectors for integration into PICs that will push the limits of optical data transmission and accelerate innovation in next-generation optical applications.
