Robotics Chiplet Lead

Research & development - Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Campus Etterbeek | About a week ago

We are searching for a program manager working on chiplets for robotics, a joint project between VUB-Brubotics and imec.

BruBotics is the Brussels Human Robotics Research Center of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In strong interdisciplinary teams we strive together to advance core robotics technologies for a new generation of robots enabling the the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) through Human Robotics. We closely work together with several companies as found our own robotics spinoffs. Brubotics is affiliated with imec.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated program manager to join a cutting-edge research initiative between VUB-Brubotics and imec, focused on developing scalable, modular chiplet architectures for robotic agents and humanoids.  This Chiplets4Robotics initiative aims to explore scalable, modularcompute platforms that enable real-time, safety-critical decision-making across diverse robotic embodiments.

Innovation topic

Humanoid and mobile robots face increasing demands for real-time perception, multimodal sensor fusion, and low-latency control in compact, energy-constrained environments, especially relevant with the growth of the foundation models. Moreover, modular compute platforms are needed to enable scalable solutions.  Not all Humanoids need the highest, the same functionality. You  will investigate chiplet-based compute stacks optimized for robotics, while looking for synergies with imec’s automotive chiplet program. The research includes benchmarking current off-the-shelf systems, defining specifications for robotics-specific chiplets, and developing a use-case demonstrator to highlight current limitations and future opportunities.

Your tasks

  • Conduct high-quality research&development and market study on chiplet architectures for robotics
Collaborate with imec and VUB-Brubotics teams to link capabilities of chiplets with requirements of (humanoid) robot applications.
  • "Proactively engage and network with industrial partners and stakeholders to capture the ‘voice of the customer,’ representing the program at international conferences and customer sites.
  • Create a vision towards a Robotics Chiplet Program, in analogy with the Automotive Chiplet Program
Contribute to patents, publications and technical reports.

Your qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher (eg PhD) in electronics, computer engineering, robotics, or related fields
Strong background in embedded systems, AI compute, and sensor integration.
  • Programming skills in C/C++, Python; knowledge of ROS is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Strong networking and relationship-building skills, with a mindset in identifying new industrial opportunities.
  • Proficiency in English

What we offer

We offer a program manager position for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the position can be renewed.
You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

How to apply

You can apply for this vacancy through sending your application consisting of the following information: the requested diplomas, a motivation letter, your academic CV (educational record, research, teaching experience, etc.).
The selection committee will review all of the applications as soon as possible and inform you whether or not you are selected. If you are selected, you will receive more details on the next steps of the selection procedure.
