Photoacoustic Spectroscopic Sensing for Medical Applications
Postdoctoral Fellowship

What You Will Do
Photoacoustics (PA) is a technique that uses laser-induced ultrasound waves to image and analyze the optical properties of tissues or materials. It combines the molecular specificity of absorption spectroscopy with the ability to bypass optical diffusion limitations, thereby enhancing localization and sensitivity. PA technologies require the tight integration of spectroscopic excitation photonics with a high-frequency, high-bandwidth and high-sensitivity ultrasound imaging array – advances now realized through imec’s developments in silicon optomechanical ultrasound sensors, readout lasers and its broader photonic integration platform.
To advance these and other innovations to meet real clinical needs, imec is seeking a highly skilled postdoctoral fellow to advance its activities in the United States. This role involves a vibrant collaboration between imec and local partners in Cambridge, MA. The purpose of this collaboration between imec and MIT is to develop innovative solutions for grand healthcare challenges by leveraging the power of semiconductor technology for non-invasive monitoring of health parameters.

As the Successful Candidate

As Postdoctoral Fellow, you will:
lead technical execution of the project and collaborate with research partners
bring your expertise and transition extensive PA know-how gained at imec Belgium
help coordinate technically between imec in Boston and Belgium, and with our partners
set up the PA lab and supporting the growth of the group
build and establish a first test-platform based on system requirements towards generating clinically relevant data.

Device development will be a joint effort between imec and its partners. You will work closely with a broad range of stakeholders, including clinicians, system engineers, device physicists, process integration engineers, and biomedical engineers. Your work will take place in Cambridge, MA, collaborating with an international team.

Who You Are

You hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or another related field.
Have hands-on experience in photoacoustics, acoustics.
Have solid knowledge and practical understanding of system engineering principles.
Experience in applying PA techniques towards medical applications is preferred.
Have published in top-level conferences and/or high-impact journals in the field.
Are self-motivated, independent, innovative, results-driven, yet rigorous, and a team player with a clear focus on delivering outcomes.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills to bridge research groups and project partners.
A strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
Adaptable to an international context and willingness for short and long stays at imec Belgium.

This opportunity invites you to be part of pioneering research and innovation within an international, diverse, and dynamic environment.
