R&D Team Lead RF Device

What you will do

To enable the next generation of communication systems (5G, 6G), the circuits are getting more complex than ever and are composed today of several chips, each implemented in different technologies, each optimized for a specific function. Downscaling of CMOS technology has allowed the integration of high-speed transceivers on Silicon chips, but power amplifiers using III-V technologies, and high-performance switches fabricated on SOI substrates remain the preferred choice for RF Front-End circuits. In order to develop cost and power-efficient RF systems, the co-integration of these different devices becomes critical.

Imec’s Advanced RF program aims at providing the required RF front-end module technologies operating up to mm-wave frequencies. The program focuses on integrating high-speed III-V or GaN transistors on large-scale Si wafers (200 mm and 300 mm), but also provides circuit, system and packaging solutions.
Within the Connectivity Pathfinding (COP) department in imec, we are seeking a skilled and ambitious professional to lead a team, comprising of senior and junior device specialists, to work on exploratory RF devices towards improved performance, reliability, and maturity. Together with the team, your mission is to take devices from proof-of-concept to validated baselines, and in the process generate impactful ideas and address the fundamental challenges to bridge the gap in knowledge/know-how leading to patents and publications.

Your main duties include:

  • You will guide and support your team through complex technical challenges, drive innovation in devices, and ensure seamless collaboration with the other teams (integration, RF characterization, epitaxial growth).
  • Ensure team spirit and personal development of the team by coaching & training on skills and competencies.
  • You ensure high-quality data analysis, reporting, and technical documentation.
  • You stay abreast of new scientific developments within your area, you contribute to roadmaps and capacity planning, and you collaborate with your peers to prepare the team for future challenges.
  • You oversee all the activities carried out by the team, follow progress and change the plan accordingly, seeking a balance between the team’s ambitions/goals and the program/project needs as needed.
  • Please note that the position is based in Leuven (Belgium). An on-site presence of at least three days is required.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

  • You have a PhD in electrical engineering, material engineering, or applied physics and at least 8 years of experience, and preferably 10+ years of experience, in the relevant field of RF devices.
  • You have demonstrable leadership ability or experience, and people management skills.
  • You have a strong background in device physics, simulation (e.g. EM, TCAD) and semiconductor technology
  • We value your experience and know-how in device design/modelling, engineering, and characterization (DC to RF) in a variety of transistor architectures (e.g. HEMT, HBT) and material systems (e.g  III-V, GaN).
  • You have excellent communication and reporting skills to interface with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You have strong organizational skills and show the flexibility to change between different projects according to changing priorities.
  • You have demonstrated ability to work with-in cross-functional teams and can effectively collaborate within and outside their team.
  • You like taking initiative, you are persuasive and assertive, while keeping a constructive attitude.
  • You show proven problem-solving skills and have a pro-active attitude.
  • Given the international character of imec, a fluent knowledge of English is necessary.
  • You live in Belgium or are willing to relocate.
