Student project: Development of a Microbiome Sensor for Ingestible Health Applications

Over the past decade, the microbiome has emerged as a key player in human health and disease. At OnePlanet, we’ve already made major progress in understanding gut physiology through our ingestible pill. Building on this platform, we now aim to go a step further, to sense microbial activity itself. Join our team and help us turn groundbreaking science into real-world health solutions.

*Important for non-EU students: You’ll need to be registered at a Dutch university to meet immigration requirements.

What you will do

  • Contribute to the further development of our innovative microbiome sensor.
  • Design, test, and validate sensor principles and measurement protocols.
  • Integrate biochemical techniques with fluorescence detection methods.
  • Work hand-in-hand with OnePlanet’s ingestible engineering teams.
  • Collaborate closely with our biochemistry partners at Radboud University.

What we do for you

  • You will work at the forefront of ingestible sensor development, advancing our understanding of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. By exploring the role of the microbiome and host–microbe interactions, your work will contribute to improving human health and enabling the development of new therapeutics.
  • Join a diverse and multidisciplinary team of experts from both biological and technical backgrounds who will guide and support your research.
  • Engage with the broader OnePlanet and imec community of scientists and innovators, expanding your knowledge and professional network.
  • Collaborate in shaping the next generation of sensors that push the boundaries of health technology.

Who you are

  • You are a master’s student in biochemistry, medical technology, or a related field.
  • You are creative and capable of independently designing and executing laboratory experiments.
  • You are available for an internship of approximately 6 months.
  • You have a motivated, hands-on attitude and are eager to explore new scientific and technological fields.
  • You are a team player who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • You are legally entitled to do an internship in the Netherlands.
