Imec's Florida center accelerates innovation of advanced packaging and novel computing technologies, helping to shape the future of high-performance communication systems and data infrastructure.

Advancing next-generation computing technologies

Imec’s Florida center is part of imec’s global R&D network, contributing to breakthrough innovation in connected computing. Located within a rapidly evolving U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, the center combines imec’s worldwide expertise with strong local partnerships, including the NSF Florida Semiconductor Engine, industry, and academia.

The site is located within NeoCity: a mixed-use development owned and operated by Osceola County. Imec Florida collaborates closely with local stakeholders to build the semiconductor ecosystem and address the growing demands of high-performance communication systems and data infrastructure.

By linking global imec programs to local design and prototyping capabilities, imec Florida helps to bring research closer to real-world deployment.

Imec Florida focuses on two key domains for next-generation computing: heterogeneous integration and superconducting computing.

RF interposer for heterogeneous integration

Imec's Florida center leverages imec's advanced RF interposer technology, enabling high-frequency systems for next-gen wireless as well as data center applications. This system-level platform for heterogeneous integration enables the combination in one package of:

  • the superior gain, power, and efficiency of III-V materials such as InP and GaN
  • the scalability and cost-efficiency of silicon CMOS

Through its design and mmWave test capabilities, imec's Florida center aims to develop a manufacturable and reliable transceiver model, and to share advanced RF interposer technologies with its U.S. ecosystem partners.
 

Superconducting computing

Imec's Florida center also contributes to imec’s research in superconducting computing. This emerging computing paradigm tackles the rising demand for computational resources by using zero-resistance materials at cryogenic temperatures. This will result in:

  • More energy-efficient compute operations
  • Increased compute density through compact system integration

The activities in Florida cover system architecture, circuit design, and cryogenic testing to support next-generation compute technologies for data centers and AI workloads.
