Colloidal Quantum-Dot Photodiodes for Compressed Spectral Sensing

Master internship - Leuven | Just now

From engineered photodiodes to reconstructed spectra: co-optimized optical and electrical photodiodes, and computational sensing.

The Challenge

Spectral sensing captures wavelength-dependent optical information that remains inaccessible to conventional broadband imaging systems. In the short-wave infrared (SWIR) range, this capability is particularly valuable for applications such as Earth observation, agrifood monitoring, waste sorting, and material characterization. Conventional spectrometers typically rely on optical filters and bulk optical components, which increase system complexity and significantly reduce the available optical signal due to filtering losses.

What You Will Do

This project explores an alternative approach based on colloidal quantum-dot (cQD) photodiodes combined with compressed spectral sensing techniques. In particular, you will investigate the integration of solution‑processable cQD photodiodes with compressed‑sensing–based spectral reconstruction methods.

You will get the chance to

  • Model the device physcics (e.g. TCAD, TMM) of this optoelectronic device
  • Fabricate thin film photodiode stacks based on cQD
  • Characterize cQD photodiodes electrically and optically
  • Investigated spectral reconstruction algorithms

Your experimental work will be supported by data analysis and modeling, helping you draw meaningful conclusions from your results. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work in an international research environment, collaborating with experienced researchers and engineers who will support your scientific growth.

Requirements

The project offers experience in device modeling, thin-film processing and optical and electrical characterization within a multidisciplinary research team. A background in semiconductor devices, photonics, electrical engineering or materials science is desirable. Experience with TCAD, optical simulation, Python or MATLAB is an advantage, and the balance between modeling, fabrication support and characterization can be adjusted to the candidate’s background and interests. A strong command of English is essential for effective communication.

Time Distribution

40% modeling and simulation, 30% fabrication support and laboratory work, 20% characterization and data analysis, 10% literature study and reporting
