Principal Silicon Photonics/III-V Laser Device Engineer

Engineering - Leuven | About a week ago

Join the 3D and silicon photonics team at imec’s R&D headquarters located in the heart of Europe and help in revolutionizing next-generation silicon-integrated photonics.

Principal Silicon Photonics/III-V Laser Device Engineer

Imec is a global pioneer in developing integrated silicon photonics technology through its Optical I/O R&D program targeting short-reach optical communications. This technology is successfully offered via wafer-level prototype fabrication services to customers in telecom, datacom, computing, bio-medical, and sensing applications. By leveraging the mature CMOS processes used in electronics, high-volume and high-yield Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) can be fabricated at a relatively low cost. Among the major building blocks in a silicon PIC, the III-V-based lasers amplifiers are critical.

What you will do

As a Principal Silicon Photonics/ III-V Laser Designer, you drive the development of heterogeneously integrated III-V lasers and amplifiers into imec’s silicon photonics technology. You act as the technical interface between cross-collaborating teams of Layout design, Epitaxy, process integration, SiPho test, and customers and use their feedback to improve your class of devices. You participate in internal SiPho development runs on 200mm and 300mm to implement improved component designs and you leverage imec’s automated SiPho test stations to implement and test your new device concepts with fast turnaround times. You will be a member of a highly talented pathfinding team who have expertise in their fields and are always curious.

Your responsibilities:

  • Your mission as a Principal Laser Device Engineer will be to drive the wafer-scale integration of InP and GaAs laser devices into imec’s Si photonics platforms. More specifically, you will be responsible for the laser device design, simulation, layout, data analysis, and qualification.
  • You are responsible for streamlining project execution by working closely with imec’s process integration, assembly, test, and reliability engineers, as well as with external suppliers.
  • You will be the strategic point of contact for the development of imec’s Si Photonics Laser Integration activities, liaising with our key internal and external customers. In addition, you will contribute to defining imec’s laser integration roadmap, in collaboration with the program management team.
  • You are responsible for coordinating laser reliability assessment and improvement activities. Together with imec’s reliability experts, you will identify failure modes and propose solutions to prolong the lifetime of devices.
  • You will be reporting the results to internal stakeholders, including peers across team/group/unit, and the external stakeholders including imec customers and core partners, as well as the scientific community.
  • You need to stay on top of the state of the art within your competence domain and benchmark imec’s solutions.
  • You will bring innovation to the team and write the proposals working closely with the imec fellow.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. In everything we do, your future colleagues are guided by the imec values of passion, excellence, connectedness, and integrity. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process, not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec Academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.
