Help develop next-generation thin film photodetectors technology for Infra-Red sensing

R&D Assistant Thin Film Devices for Cutting-edge Photodetector Research

What you will do

Join imec’s Optoelectronics team under the Exploratory Optical and Electrical Devices (EXPLODE) department, where we push the limits of materials and device engineering to create the photonic, imaging, logic and biomedical technologies of tomorrow. We are seeking an R&D Assistant to help develop next-generation thin film photodetectors technology for Infra-Red sensing. This is your chance to contribute to innovations with real-world impact in sensing, imaging, and beyond.
In this job, your main responsibilities will be:
  • Independently perform and support experiments in the lab, including thin film deposition (spin coating in glove box, PVD, CVD, ALD) and photolithographic patterning.
  • Carry out physical and electro-optical characterization of deposited layers and fabricated devices.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret scientific and statistical data, drawing valid conclusions and reporting results clearly.
  • Write and adapt process recipes.
  • Maintain and operate measurement equipment; train colleagues as needed.
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and PhD students to refine processes, recipes, and experimental setups.
  • Work in accordance with safety and cleanliness protocols in an R&D lab environment.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

Must-have:
  • Master’s in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, materials engineering, or related field (B.Sc. with significant relevant experience also considered).
  • Proven experience in an R&D lab environment.
  • Strong hands-on skills with lab equipment and willingness to learn new processing techniques.
  • Team-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with nanoparticle-based thin films, thin film photodetectors, LEDs, or solar cells.
  • Familiarity with electro-optical, microscopic, and morphological thin film characterization techniques.
  • Knowledge of patterning processes.

In addition:

  • You are creative and like to solve problems.
  • You work safely, neatly and effectively and can clearly communicate and report results and ideas.
  • You are flexible to accept new challenges and new tasks according to the team demands.
  • Given the international character of imec, a good knowledge of English is mandatory.

At imec, you’ll work alongside some of the brightest minds in nanoelectronics and photonics. You’ll have access to world-class labs, be part of multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to technologies that can transform industries. We offer a stimulating, international work environment with opportunities for learning and professional growth.

We seek a candidate who thrives in a dynamic work environment, showcasing an adaptability to diverse projects or research topics. You’ll be a key team player, ready to support colleagues and tackle impactful projects within the timelines of our trusted global partners.
