Senior Sensor‑Fusion & Edge‑AI Engineer

The Context

At the Near Sensor AI team at imec, we build nextgeneration edgedeployed, multisensor perception systems designed to operate under strict size, weight, and power and real-time compute constraints. These systems merge advanced sensing modalities, highly optimized embedded AI workloads, and custom hardware platforms to enable robust, realworld perception.

To drive this initiative, we are hiring a Senior SensorFusion & EdgeAI Engineer. In this role, you own the end-to-end architecture of these systems, from initial mathematical concepts through to functional demonstrators, serving as the critical bridge between our algorithmic, hardware, and platform engineering teams.

What you will do

You actively shape imec’s research and engineering roadmap by tackling the following core architectural challenges:

  • Architecting endtoend multisensor fusion and ondevice AI pipelines that guarantee tight latency, power efficiency, and fail-safe robustness.
  • Driving hardware–software codesign to radically optimize state estimation and deep-learning inference on resource-constrained embedded edge platforms.
  • Establishing rigorous benchmarking methodologies to systematically evaluate the tradeoffs between algorithmic accuracy, compute latency, and power consumption.
  • Translating complex, highlevel system requirements into implementable architectural specifications, work packages, and strict acceptance criteria for multidisciplinary teams.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

We are looking for a technical leader who combines profound algorithmic depth with battle-tested systems engineering.

The following requirements are non-negotiable:

  • Education: A PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics (or equivalent industry experience), backed by a minimum of 5-8 years of applied experience in perception, sensor fusion, and edge AI.
  • Hardware Deployment: A proven track record of shipping real-time, compute-heavy systems on edge or embedded hardware, with a deep understanding of AI workload optimization and memory bandwidth constraints.
  • State Estimation & Math: Deep, hands-on expertise in advanced sensorfusion and state estimation techniques, EKF/UKF, and rigorous spatio-temporal calibration of heterogeneous sensor arrays.
  • Sensor modalities: Extensive experience processing and synchronizing time-series data from Radar, LiDAR, and IMUs, alongside a strong familiarity with earlyfusion Deep Learning approaches.
  • Software: programming capabilities in C/C++, Python.
  • Embedded systems: Strong familiarity with embedded Linux, real-time operating constraints, low-level code optimization, FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx/AMD, Intel/Altera).
  • Technical leadership: The ability to produce concise, rigorous technical documentation, communicate complex architectural trade-offs across domains, and drive cross-functional alignment.
