Student project: Fabrication and Characterization of Polyelectrolyte-Based Ion-Selective Electrodes

The goal of this project is to develop ion-selective electrode (ISE) for determination of potassium. The activity involves the fabrication of miniaturized electrodes and their electrochemical characterization.

What you will do

You will join the laboratory at OnePlanet Research Center, collaborating closely with Professor Louis de Smet’s group, part of the laboratory of Organic Chemistry at Wageningen University. This research focuses on developing miniaturized ion-selective electrodes using innovative polymeric membranes. Unlike traditional four-component ion-selective membranes, our approach includes polyelectrolytes, eliminating the need for the commonly used matrix polymer and ion-buffering lipophilic salts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute experiments to optimize sensor fabrication.
  • Develop and test various sensor prototypes in the lab.
  • Characterize sensor performance under varying conditions (e.g., temperature, pH, light exposure, biofouling in complex matrices).

What we do for you

We are a passionate team of sensor experts seeking a highly motivated student to join us. This unique role offers the opportunity to work primarily at our research center while also gaining valuable experience at Wageningen University. You’ll thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment with exciting opportunities for professional growth.

Who you are

  • MSc student in Molecular Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering or a related field
  • Strong affinity with (willing to learn) electrochemistry.
  • Hands-on approach in setting-up and performing experiments.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of data analysis.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
  • Available for 6 months in Wageningen, NL.
